Remember that the quality of your mount starts with you. Proper field care is of great importance. Please call us if you have questions about field care. The onset of decomposition is immediate. It is imperative to care for your trophy to yield a better quality mount.
Tips to follow to insure a high quality mount:
- Never hang or drag by the neck
- Never slit the throat
- Wipe excess blood off of the hide-DO NOT wash
- Avoid freezer burn, which damages hides. In order to avoid this double bag and remove as much air as possible.
- We recommend bringing the entire hide in. Then there is not a chance of it being short.
Field care tips for bird/foul care:
- Do not gut the bird.
- Take great care not to damage the feathers.
- Wipe off excess blood with a damp cloth.
- Carefully fold feathers in and tuck the head under the wing.
Guidelines for small mammals - Small mammals, such as a coyote or smaller, should not be skinned or gutted. Small mammals experience rapid decomposition due to a thin hide. Bacteria also manifest quickly therefore it is important to freeze the animal as soon as it is cooled.
